An editorial from the Galway Advertiser honouring coastguard Caitriona Lucas, who died during a rescue off the west coast last year, has been named as a winner in a global contest to honour the best editorial writing in weekly newspapers.

Four NUI Galway public engagement and education initiatives have been awarded funding of more than €250,000 through the Science Foundation Ireland Discover Programme.

Galway harpist Úna Ní Fhlannagáin, from Craughwell in Galway originally but now living in Bearna, took home the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal for harp in the final broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta from Cork.

Galwayman Ciarán Stewart was named ‘Franchisee of the Year’ and Eyre Square branch manager Rajen Subramamiam named ‘Manager of the Year’ Award at the Supermac’s All Stars Awards event in the Loughrea Hotel and Spa last week. Ciaran operates stores in Tullamore, Navan and Drogheda while Rajen is the manager at the Supermac’s Eyre Square branch. They received their awards for outstanding achievement in service, operations, marketing and public relations. In all there were 18 awards handed out on the night covering Supermac’s, Papa John’s and SuperSubs.
